Our brand new blog, kicks off today with its very first project!
So get out your art supplies and get ready for our first project,
a cat!
First class_#1:
Before we start the class activity it is important to activate
students prior knowledge, for this "warm up" session
the whole class must be gathered in a small circle where we will be brainstorming
using a mind-map of our ideas on previous concepts and vocabulary
about shapes and colour. When we have created our mind map, we
will start teaching them new vocabulary of the unit. But we cannot teach students
all the vocabulary of the unit in one day, so during this first week I have
created a list of ten words in kidsspell.com and with this video: The Shape Song! Students will hopefully start making connections about
the shapes they see in real life. Finally with the help of this video: Let’s draw!, students will draw a cat! It is easy to
follow directions and it will use familiar vocabulary of basic shapes
and colours. In the video the pace is nice and slow, if they need
more time, they only need to hit the pause button until they are ready for the
next step.
This video is a great way to open a conversation with your students.
Ask questions about their drawings: What’s your cat’s name? Do
you have a cat at home? What do cats eat? How do you take care of a cat? It’s
always fun to talk about your art!
At the end of the activity we will gather around, and students will share
their drawings and briefly explain to their peers and teacher what was the
coolest part of the activity and what new vocabulary they learnt while drawing.
Bonus activity: If students are risk takers tell them to grab their crayons, use their colourful brain and start drawing their own creation using shapes.
